The visible turf is only the finish layer
Performance depends heavily on excavation, base material, compaction, drainage, edge restraint, seams, infill and how the surface connects to surrounding paving and planting.
Choose the system by use
| Application | Priorities |
|---|---|
| General lawn | Natural appearance, recovery, drainage, seam control and comfortable pile |
| Pet zone | Drainage, cleanability, odor-management strategy and accessible edges |
| Pool edge/accent | Heat, wet traction, chemical exposure, drainage and precise transitions |
| Putting green | Stable base, intended speed, contours, cup placement, fringe and consistent installation |
Base and drainage
The base should be designed for the soil, anticipated load, drainage route and product system. Surface water still needs positive movement; permeable turf alone does not correct trapped subgrade or poor outlet conditions.
Seams, edges and direction
Pile direction changes appearance. Seams should be planned around view direction and traffic. Edges require secure, maintainable restraint so they do not curl, spread or separate at paving.
Heat and comfort
Synthetic turf can become hot in direct sun. Product, color, infill, air movement, shade and weather affect surface temperature. It should be evaluated honestly for barefoot and pet use rather than sold as a maintenance-free substitute for natural lawn.
Putting-green performance
Contour and speed should be intentionally designed for the homeowner’s desired experience. Do not promise a numerical green speed unless the exact turf, infill, installation and test method support it.
Maintenance
Synthetic turf still requires debris removal, grooming, infill attention, weed-edge control and pet-area cleaning. Localized damage and seams must remain serviceable.
Heat, drainage, maintenance and warranty terms vary by product and installation system. Artistix reviews the selected manufacturer’s current information and provides project-specific pricing with the proposed scope.
Compare installation and ownership together
Ask what the surface will be used for, how its base drains and how seams and edges remain serviceable. A putting green, pet area and pool accent place different demands on the selected system. Review heat exposure and ongoing cleaning before choosing turf primarily for its appearance.
