The best lawn is the one suited to the site and the way it will be used
Zeon zoysia is often Artistix’s preferred finish for high-end projects because of its refined texture and cohesive appearance. It is not automatically correct for every exposure, activity level or maintenance expectation.
Quick comparison
| Decision factor | Zeon and fine-textured zoysias | Other zoysias | Bermuda |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visual character | Fine, dense and refined | Varies by cultivar | Fine to medium, athletic appearance |
| Sun tolerance | Cultivar- and site-dependent; often more shade-tolerant than Bermuda | Varies materially | Performs best with strong sun |
| Wear recovery | Generally slower than Bermuda | Varies | Fast recovery in active growing conditions |
| Edge control | Dense growth; still requires edging | Varies | Aggressive spread requires deliberate containment |
| Maintenance style | Quality depends on mowing height, blade sharpness and thatch management | Cultivar-specific | Frequent growing-season mowing and fertility can be important |
| Best fit | Refined pool landscapes and cohesive lawns | Match cultivar to conditions | Full-sun, active or high-recovery areas |
This is a planning comparison, not a substitute for evaluating cultivar, sunlight, soil, drainage and maintenance capability.
Why we generally avoid mixing a small Bermuda area into Zeon
Bermuda spreads aggressively and can migrate into adjoining zoysia. For a pet or concentrated-use zone, a deliberately separated surface—such as pet-rated synthetic turf, gravel or mulch—can be more predictable than introducing a small patch of competing turf into a refined Zeon lawn.
Poolside considerations
- Wet foot traffic and repeated shortcuts create wear paths.
- Dense shade from structures or trees changes turf performance.
- Pool overflow and splash zones should drain rather than remain saturated.
- Lawn edges should be accessible without throwing clippings into the pool.
- The irrigation plan must distinguish lawn from beds and hardscape.
Establishment matters
New sod requires close contact with prepared soil, correct watering, limited traffic and a gradual transition to normal irrigation. Overwatering can be as damaging as drought when drainage is poor.
Artistix’s perspective
For a visually continuous luxury landscape, we generally prefer one intentional turf language rather than a patchwork of grasses. The final recommendation follows the site—not a universal favorite.
Turf performance varies by cultivar, site conditions and maintenance. Artistix confirms the recommendation for the property and provides project-specific pricing with the proposed landscape scope.
Match the selection to the complete yard
Compare the sunlight, traffic and maintenance expectations of each lawn area rather than assuming one grass suits the whole property. Shade from the home or a new structure may change the usable turf area. Coordinate the final choice with irrigation and the way people move between the pool, lawn and gathering areas.
