Pool Pumps, Cartridge Filtration and Gas Heating

Artistix frequently uses the Jandy VS FloPro 2.7-THP variable-speed pump as the filtration workhorse, adjusting the selection when hydraulic calculations, spas or feature demands require another solution.

Quick answer

The pump moves water, the filter removes suspended debris and the heater adds heat. These three components must be selected as one system. Bigger equipment is not automatically better if the plumbing, gas service, electrical supply or intended operating modes cannot support it.

The pump sets water in motion

A variable-speed pump can run at different speeds for filtration, spa use and water features. Daily filtration usually needs less flow than a spa or dramatic feature, so one fixed high speed would waste energy and create unnecessary noise.

Artistix frequently uses the Jandy VS FloPro 2.7-THP variable-speed pump as the primary circulation pump, adjusting the selection when hydraulic calculations or feature demands require another solution. The exact model and programming are confirmed for the project.

Horsepower does not tell the whole story

A pump’s useful performance depends on the resistance in the installed system. Pipe length, pipe size, fittings, elevation, filters, heaters and valves all affect the flow produced at a given speed.

Reserve capacity can be useful, but commissioning should keep flow within the limits of the plumbing and equipment. The goal is the required performance at the lowest practical operating speed.

Cartridge filtration

A cartridge filter passes water through removable filter elements. Dirt stays on the cartridge surfaces until the filter is opened and cleaned. Unlike a backwash-style system, routine cartridge cleaning does not use pool water to flush debris to waste.

Artistix commonly favors a large filter area because it can reduce restriction and extend cleaning intervals under comparable conditions. Pollen, leaves, landscaping, bather use, algae and water chemistry still determine how often cleaning is needed. When Jandy equipment is selected, the CV580 is often considered, subject to the final hydraulic design.

What filter pressure tells you

The pressure gauge is most useful when compared with the clean-filter starting pressure recorded at commissioning. A rising pressure can indicate that the filter is collecting debris, but the correct service point comes from the equipment instructions and installed system.

Low or unusual pressure can also matter. Owners should learn the normal range instead of relying on one universal number.

Natural-gas heating

A gas heater can raise spa temperature quickly and can extend pool use when conditions allow. Artistix frequently uses a Jandy JXiQ 400,000-BTU natural-gas heater where appropriate.

The heater choice is only part of the work. Gas type, meter and regulator capacity, pipe sizing, electrical control, airflow, clearances and venting conditions must support the installed unit. An undersized gas route can prevent a large heater from performing correctly.

Why heat-up time varies

No single heat-up time applies to every project. Water volume, starting temperature, target temperature, air temperature, wind, humidity, cover use and heat loss all matter. A raised spa on a cold, windy evening behaves differently from a covered pool during mild weather.

North Atlanta operating context

Heavy spring pollen, mature trees and summer storms can increase filter loading. Cool nights and wind can increase heat loss. Equipment should be sized and programmed for how the family will actually use the pool, not merely for a brochure maximum.

Commissioning records to keep

  • Normal filtration speed and daily schedule.
  • Spa and water-feature speeds.
  • Clean-filter starting pressure.
  • Heater and sanitation flow requirements.
  • Valve positions and automation labels.
  • Model, serial and warranty-registration information.

Questions to ask

  • Which operating modes need high flow?
  • Can the filter be opened and cartridges removed easily?
  • Does the gas service support the selected heater?
  • What is the normal clean-filter pressure?
  • Who programs and documents the final speeds?
  • Which current warranty terms apply to each exact model?
